AUDIENCE EFFECT

Anne Keothavong is the No 1 women's tennis player in Britain and was ranked 49th internationally, but Wimbledon 2009 brought her to tears. She was unexpectedly beaten by Patricia Meyr of Austria, ranked 32 places lower than her. Whena sports journalist from the Mirror asked her if she had let British fans down with her performance, Keothavong famously burst into tears. She went on to argue that British crowds at Wimbledon were incredibly unsupportive. "I've been fortunate enough to witness everything at all of the grand slams and definitely in Australia they get really behind their players and they make a lot of noise," said Keothavong. "I think players do appreciate that but I guess in England everyone is a little more reserved. They're probably out to criticise their own players rather than get behind them, rather than giving them all the help they can." Watch the interview on this video clip. So, can a noisy, supportive audience actually HELP a player's performance?

Your third Independent Study is on Audience Effects and is divided into three studies:

  • Theories of Audience Effect
  • Studies into Audience Effect
  • Home Advantage

To help you complete the work, view this PowerPoint slideshow. It will not be enough by itself, however: you will need to read through the page linked to each of the bullet points. When you have taken all your notes, you can attempt the exam-style questions.

STUDIES INTO AUDIENCE EFFECT

And the biggest rock concert ever? Only Rod Stewart playing to 3½ million on Copacabana Beach in Rio back on New Year’s Eve 1994. “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” Well, the atmosphere was drenched with sexual overtones: nudity, drinking – you name it… Over 4,381 women gave birth during the concert! Click the image to visit the Audience Studies page.

HOME ADVANTAGE

One of the most impressive run of home wins in football, perhaps in any sport, must go to Chelsea FC. The Blues had a 86-game unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge from 2004 to 2008. It was only ended by Xabi Alonso's 10th minute goal for Liverpool in a match that ended 0-1. Click the image to visit the Home Advantage page.

(a) Explain, using examples, why audiences help some times win. [10 marks]

(b) Evaluate research into audience effect in sport in terms of quantitative & qualitative data. [15 marks]
