THE (a) QUESTION - explaining & describing

This question asks you to write for about 8 minutes on one of the specific sub-topics, eg Forensic Psychology might be about Dysfunctional Brains (Raine et al.) or Sport Psychology might be about Instinct Theories of Aggression (Freud).

1-2 marks (BAND 1)

Mostly bad points

  • Lacks psychological terminology
  • Not related to the question
  • Badly organised
  • Poor spelling/grammar

Few good points

  • Well, you wrote something
  • You included some basic details

 3-5 marks (BAND 2)

Some bad points

  • Not enough detail
  • You didn’t have conclusions relating back to the question
  • You didn’t focus on the right things

Some good points

  • You got the basic terminology
  • You included some examples
  • It makes sense and it’s got some structure
  • Spelling/grammar is OK

 6-8 marks (BAND 3)

A few bad points

  • There are a few mistakes about details
  • Your conclusions are a bit muddled in places

Lots of good points

  • You got the terminology right
  • You included plenty of examples
  • You relate things back to the question
  • It’s well written

 9-10 marks (BAND 4)

Hardly any bad points

  • The odd spelling mistake
  • Occasionally you repeat yourself or miss something out

Mostly good points

  • You include lots of terminology
  • You go into lots of detail and it’s correct
  • Your examples and conclusions are very clear
  • Everything relates back to the question

THE (b) QUESTION - evaluating

This question asks you to write for about 14 minutes on one particular evaluation issue. The question will relate to a whole topic, eg Forensic Psychology might be about Criminal Biology or Sport Psychology might be about Aggression. You can refer to any studies or theories you like that are covered by that topic.

1-3 marks (BAND 1)

Mostly bad points

  • It was muddled
  • Not related to the question
  • Hardly any examples
  • You didn’t have any real conclusions

Few good points

  • Well, you wrote something
  • You included a couple of evaluation points

 4-7 marks (BAND 2)

Some bad points

  • It’s a bit all-over-the-place
  • There’s not much argument – just a list of points
  • Some of your points weren’t related to the question

Some good points

  • You included some evaluation points that linked back to the question
  • You wrote some conclusions that showed you understood things

 8-11 marks (BAND 3)

A few bad points

  • A bit unbalanced – too much on one thing, not enough on something else
  • You don’t develop all your points

Lots of good points

  • You cover a range of different issues
  • It’s related to the question
  • Some good examples
  • Your conclusions clearly show you understand things

 12-15 marks (BAND 4)

Hardly any bad points

  • You don’t cover every issue
  • You’re unclear in places

Mostly good points

  • Many evaluation points, covering a range of issues
  • You develop your points
  • Everything is related back to the question
  • Plenty of good examples
  • A real argument, with proper conclusions
